Existing Nitrate Vulnerable Zones - England

This website provides access to detailed maps of the existing Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) in England (designated in 1996 and 2002) which show:

  • The NVZ boundary matched to individual field boundaries (Interactive Mapping).
  • The reason for designating an area of land as an NVZ (Summary Maps).

Full details of the Action Programme measures, with which farmers located in these NVZs need to comply, are available on the DEFRA NVZ web pages

Defra has recently completed a review of the existing NVZs. The review indicated that coverage needs to be increased from 55% of England to about 70%. Information on the proposals to revise the NVZs, including regional maps showing new areas of the country that will be included in an NVZ, is available on the DEFRA NVZ web pages.
